La bamba es una canción tradicional mexicana de autor anónimo. Pertenece al género musical denominado Son Jarocho y es reconocida como un himno popular de la ciudad de Veracruz. Ritchie Valens, seudónimo de Ricardo Esteban Valenzuela Reyes (13 de mayo de 1941- 3 de febrero de 1959), fue un cantautor y guitarrista de origen mexicano nacido en Estados Unidos. Un pionero del rock and roll y un precursor del movimiento de rock, la carrera de Valens sólo duró ocho meses. Durante este tiempo, sin embargo, se anotó varios éxitos, en particular La Bamba, que originalmente es una canción popular mexicana de son jarocho, la cual Valenzuela transformó con un ritmo de rock and roll y convirtió en un éxito en 1958, haciendo de Valenzuela un pionero del movimiento de rock and roll de habla castellana.
El 3 de febrero de 1959, en lo que se conoce como El Día que Murió la Música. Valenzuela murió en un accidente de avión en Iowa, un evento que cobró la vida de los también músicos Buddy Holly y J.P “El Big Bopper” Richardson.
