#10 Movile Cave
In 1986, a cave was Discovered near Mangalia, Constanța County, Romania, just off the coast of the Black Sea. The oxygen levels are nearly negligent, but due to chemosynthesis, At least forty-eight species of wildlife has been stored away for possible millions of years. Many of these animals are unique to this specific cave.
The cave is unsafe for humans and most animals. It is completely Void of light and contains toxic gasses that the specialized animals within the cave require to live. Less than 100 people have been allowed in the cave, and to get to the entrance you have to be Lowered 65ft into the ground through a narrow passage.
Microbiologist, Rich Boden was one of the first to enter the cave and one of the few to see the lake below, “The pool of warm, sulphidic water stinks of rotting eggs or burnt rubber when you disturb it as hydrogen sulphide is given off.”
The animals that live in Movile Cave are Generally born without eyes or skin pigment, due to the fact that they live in the darkness and don’t need sight or camouflage.
As for humans, if you go in without a special mask it wouldn’t be long before the lack of oxygen and toxic gasses took their toll. It would Begin with labored breathing and a headache, followed by kidney damage…and the rest, well; no one has ever gotten that far.
#9 Lake Vostok
Out of over 400 lakes in Antarctica only one can be the largest, and the title goes to Lake Vostok. The lake is at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia’s Vostok Station. It resides Far beneath the surface of the central East Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is 11,000ft above sea level. This freshwater lake’s surface is about 13,000ft under the surface of the ice, meaning it would be less than 2000ft below sea level.
The lake has Supposedly been untouched for at least 400,000 years, and it wasn’t until 2012 that scientists completed the longest ever ice core that reached 12,400ft and finally pierced through to the surface of the lake. However, as soon as this happened, Water from the lake gushed up the borehole used to extract the water, and mixed with Freon and kerosene that was used to keep the hole from freezing. In 2015, teams tried again and were successful in retrieving a pure sample. Still, Humans have only touched the surface of this lost world and it is believed that new, unseen creatures could dwell in Lake Vostok. The question is…will humans ever reach them?
#8 Son Doong Cave
Son Doong Cave, or known in Vietnam as Hang Sơn Đoòng is a Solutional cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam. Son Doong Cave is often called the largest cave in the world. It was discovered by a local man named Hồ Khanh in 1991. People from the area knew about the cave, but the steep descent at the entrance as well as the loud sound of the wind and water rushing through the cave, prevented locals from entering. Of course, everyone thought it was spooky! It wasn’t until 2009 that the cave was shared with the world when British Cave Research Association conducted a survey nearby. Unfortunately, their progress was stopped when they ran into a 200 ft calcite wall known as the Great Wall of Vietnam.
In 2013, Some of the largest cave pearls known to man were discovered, some reaching the size of a baseball! Later on, in 2013, the first tourist group explored the cave. The tickets to join this exploration cost a whopping $3,000. Permits are required to access the cave and are given out on a limited basis. Only about 800 are available in 2017 and only through August. During the Fall and Winter months, the water levels are so high that the cave is inaccessible.
#7 Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel
Cerro Sarisariñama is a Tepui or flattop mountain range in Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park. Located in Venezuela. The name of the mountain is derived from the tale of Ye’kuana Indians who live near the mountain. They tell a Tale about an evil spirit living in caves up in the mountain and devouring human flesh with a sound “Sari… sari…” (Some sort of windy sound effect?)
On this mountain there are two mysterious sinkholes known as Sima Humboldt & Sima Martel. The larger of the two is Sima Humboldt is over 1000ft deep and over 1000ft wide. The bottom of each hole has its very own individual ecosystem. It was first descended in 1974 and as of today, is exclusive for scientific researchers.

10. Green Iguanas
Iguanas are a popular pet for collectors of exotic animals because of how cute they look and supposedly they are easy to take care of. Unfortunately the idea that they are simple to look after was likely spread by those who sell them, because they actually need a strict environment and diet to survive. They can also be difficult to tame and handle, especially when they are fully grown, and this has led to a large number being released into the wild.
They are naturally from central and south America, and thrive in warm environments. This has meant that those released in similar climates, such as those found in parts of California, Florida and Hawaii, have thrived and begun to breed. This has been detrimental to the local ecosystems where they compete with native species for food, and will prey on species that haven’t adapted to deal with these kind of threats. As a result, Iguanas are illegal to own in Hawaii because of the potential devastation and havoc they can cause on the islands. In Florida, the populations of feral iguanas have caused extensive damage to vegetation and local wildlife, so if you do decide to get one please be a responsible owner and don’t release them into the wild!.
9. Cuban Tree Frog
These cute frogs are a favorite of exotic species collectors, but the Cuban Tree Frog is causing serious issues across Florida. They are quite difficult to identify among other frog species, something that is made even more difficult by the way that they can change color. They are originally native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, and are thought to have been first introduced to Florida in the 1920’s. It’s the recent popularity of keeping them as pets, though, that has led to an explosion in their numbers in the wild as a result of collectors releasing them.
Cuban Tree Frogs are an aggressive species that feed on at least five different species of native Floridian frogs, as well lizards, small snakes and tadpoles. They are also able to survive in urban areas, and will take over birdhouses, ponds and birdbaths where they lay their eggs. They have been responsible for massive changes in the ecosystem, and have even been known to affect humans by causing power outages?? They are a danger to environments where they aren’t native, and so must not be released under any circumstances.
8. Rabbits
Rabbits are another incredibly popular pet for owners around the world, but when they are released into non-native environments they can cause serious damage. The best example of this is in Australia where they were released for hunting in 1859. Only 24 were set free, but by 1920 there were an estimated 10 billion across the country. There have been numerous attempts to curb the population growth, but with their speed of breeding, ability to feed on most vegetation, and overall resilience, rabbits still roam Australia in huge numbers and pose a threat to many of the natural species like the bilby and burrowing bettong by taking over their burrows.
7. Goldfish/Carp
They may seem harmless enough, and are a popular pet for adults and children alike around the world, but releasing your pet fish into the wild can have disastrous consequences for your local environment. Nowhere has this effect been seen more clearly than in Australia where the problem has gotten out of hand. Notorious for their strict rules on bio-containment, it’s why Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got in trouble for allegedly sneaking in their dogs. The Australians have good reason for being that way.
In 2016 researchers from the Murdoch University in Perth caught goldfish that weighed up to 2kg and were up to 30 centimeters long. These large animals are thought to have descended from a small variety that were being kept as pets and released into the wild a few years before. By feeding on more food and disrupting the ecosystems, these fish can spread and cause significant damage by off all the native species. Goldfish the size of dinner plates have also been found in Alberta, Canada, and have led to fines of $100,000 dollars to those that release non-native species into the wild.
Angler Raphael Biagini captured a legendary “giant goldfish” out of a lake in the south of France. Fellow fishermen had spent 6 years trying to capture this orange koi carp weighing 30lbs. The only way this fish ended up in the lake, was because someone was trying to get rid of it.

8. Berkeley Pit
If you’re in Butte, Montana and have 2 dollars to spend, then you might want to consider visiting Berkeley Pit. It is one of the only places in the world where you can pay to see toxic waste. It’s pretty easy, just pay the $2 admission fee and enter the viewing platform. The Berkeley Pit is a former open pit copper mine that is filled with highly acidic water. There are metals and toxic chemicals that seep out of the rocks, including copper, iron, arsenic, cadmium, zinc and sulfuric acid!
Of course, you don’t need me to tell you what would happen if you went for a swim there. The pit was closed in 1982, the groundwater slowly filled the pit and now, it is a serious environmental problem. In 1995 a flock of geese landed in the water and over 342 dead geese were recovered.
But the place is not really lifeless. New fungal and bacterial species have been found to have adapted to the extremely harsh conditions inside the pit. An even more interesting discovery was that these species developed a better production of highly toxic compounds to improve their chances for survival. Some of these might be useful against cancer!
However, there are other things about the Berkeley Pit the State of Montana should be concerned about. The water level in the pit is constantly rising. This is a very big problem because if the water level reaches the critical point it will contaminate the nearby ground water of the entire Butte valley which is home to more than 30,000 people! A water treatment plant was built in 2003 to help avoid this catastrophe and hopefully this year, 2018, the facility will be able to treat and divert the deadly water.

7. The Drake Passage
Back in the day, if you wanted to travel from the west coast of America to the east coast, you had to travel south and pass through what is known as the Drake Passage. This is where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern seas converge, and it is the fastest way to get to Antarctica. The Drake Passage is almost 1000 km wide and the current creates some extremely choppy water. Combine that with unpredictable weather and you can either have the smoothest water ever or an extremely violent journey.
Aside from the harsh weather, the Drake Passage is also known for its cold and deep waters. The waters are actually among the coldest on earth! And its average depth is of about 11,000 feet! Extremely large cargo ships that cannot go through the Panama Canal, are forced to go the long way around the Americas and go through the Drake Passage. Before the Panama Canal, the safest, most trafficked route to reach LA or San Francisco from New York was to go down to Cape Horne and around the west coast. It would take about 90 days.
There are many cruises that you can take to Antarctica and despite the rough crossing, many people say its worth it for the spectacular landscape and wildlife that you can see including dolphins, whales, and many kinds of birds. It is apparently quite the adventure!
Just make sure to take your motion sickness pill!! And whatever you do, don’t fall into the water!!

6. Saco River
Saco River is a popular recreational river and many people come here to visit every year hoping to cool off and have some fun. Located between New Hampshire and Maine, it is 220 km long. It passes through several counties and towns before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Saco Bay. You can camp near the river, rent a canoe, go tubing, or simply enjoy its beauty along the shore. It really sounds like a very nice place to spend your free time. If you ask the right person, that is.
There is a reason Saco River is on the list, after all! There is a local legend that the river is cursed. The story goes that in 1675, three drunken English sailors encountered a woman from the Sokokis tribe with her child. They made a bet about a European myth that stated that an Indian baby can swim upon birth as animals do. They attacked the woman, took her child and threw it in the lake where it drowned.
The woman’s husband, Squandro, the chief of the Sokokis tribe, cursed the river “to claim three lives every year until all white men fled its banks!”

9. Untersberg Portals
On the German-Austrian border, amid the Berchtesgaden Alps, lies the Untersberg Mountain. It is one of the most mysterious mountains in the world. Legends tell of Roman emperors buried in deep tombs, lost civilizations living in chasms, and strange beasts prowling its forests. Supposedly, who was mesmerized by the occult was obsessed with these mountains.
According to yet another legend, he built a house on a neighboring mountain and observed Untersberg through telescopes. Whether he saw anything is unknown. Visitors to the mountain, however, report missing time and waking up on other parts of the mountain. Sometimes, the distances involved are extremely long and could not possibly have been traveled during the stretch of missing time.
There are many theories ranging from alien abductions to time warps, to portals to other worlds. Skeptics, though, suggest that the people who experience these things are really ill, dehydrated, or somehow fell asleep as they walked. Austrian writer Stan Wolf claims to have found places on the mountain where his watch ran faster than other places. He also claims he found men living in a cave who told him they were soldiers who hadn’t aged a bit over the decades. Pretty spooky to me!
8. The Creatures of Mt. Nyangani
Mt. Nyangani in Zimbabwe has a chilling nickname: the “Swallowing Mountain”. It gained its name because of how often people disappear while climbing it.
According to local tradition, Mt. Nyangani is a sacred mountain inhabited by ancestral spirits. It’s also said to be haunted by evil spirits and other supernatural creatures. Locals warn that if travelers come across a colorful snake, a pot with no fire, or a brick of gold, then it’s best to ignore those things and move on. Also, mischievous spirits are said to push people off ledges.
Visitors often report feeling dizzy, disoriented, and nauseous. They also report strange sounds, lights, animals that follow them, and trees that twist into human faces and whisper. There are even rumors of streams that turn a blood red.
In November 2014, 20-year-old British explorer Thomas Gaisford set out alone to explore the mountain. He intended to reach the summit that day and stay overnight. Later, he claimed a thick fog descended during the climb, which disoriented him. Heavy rain began to pour. He decided to camp where he was and wait for the weather to clear. In the surrounding darkness, various creatures appeared to circle him. This gave credence to warnings from locals, who told him to ignore any strangely behaving animals.
Gaisford waited ten hours for the fog to clear. When it did, he left the mountain as fast as he could. Others, however, discount his story and say he was dehydrated and had imagined it all.
7. Snarly Yow
Snarly Yow sounds like a Pokemon but it’s actually a mysterious giant black dog sighted on South Mountain in Maryland. Most sightings occur at a places where the old National road cuts across a brook and canyon. Some have compared Snarly Yow to the British “black Shuck”. The difference, though, is that black Shuck is connected tothe imminent of the eyewitness, an association that hasn’t extended to Snarly. Luckily. Also, witnesses claim Snarly’s coat changes from white to black. One witness described Snarly Yow as a headless, white dog dragging a chain.
Sightings of this mysterious dog date back to an inn near South Mountain, which was built in 1790. The stories at the time had a common format: travelers passing through would have their horses spooked by a mysterious dog that appeared and then disappeared as soon as the rider was thrown from his horse.
His penchant for mischief carried over into modern times. Travelers now report that Snarly leaps out in front of cars. The driver will swerve to avoid the animal and crash. As soon as they get out of the vehicle, Snarly growls and bears its fangs before vanishing. And like a typical dog, the creature enjoys simply chasing cars. It also frightens hikers by planting itself in their path and refusing to move. However, it stops short of actually attacking people, which makes it much nicer than the Dwayyo.

10. Echo Park Lake, California
Municipalities often have to drain bodies of water to clean them out to ensure they drain properly, and that’s exactly what happened to Echo Park Lake in 2011. It turns out the site had become a favorite place for people to hide things, and officials were surprised to find the wide range of objects that were found in the 29 acre lake.
The $65 million project to revitalise the area found 20 park trash cans, 36 construction cones, 7 shopping carts, 3 stereos, 6 skateboards and a pay telephone. Ominously they also found 2 hand guns, which were sent off for testing to see if they had been involved in any crimes, and one parking enforcement boot. Most bizarre of all were two model boats that couldn’t cope with the calm waters of the lake and, for some reason, an entire toilet.

9. Tempe Town Lake
Tempe Town Lake was created in 1999 after a section of the dry riverbed of the Salt River that passed through Tempe, Arizona was chosen to be the site of a large body of water to help improve the water quality available to local residents and businesses. It opened to the public on November 7 of that year, and soon became a local hotspot for art installations and sports activities. Initially the lake was built by using rubber barriers to keep water in the area, but this turned out to be an unreliable design, so the city decided to drain the lake to upgrade it. The process of replacing the rubber barriers with a steel-gate dam meant that all the water had to be removed, and some dark secrets of the area were revealed.
Among the usual trash that had accumulated in the waters, such as bottles, tires and huge amounts of plastic- officials also found a number of weapons. A knife, three pistols and part of another gun were all found in the mud and it looked like someone had been trying to destroy the evidence. On further investigation it turned out that one of the guns had been stolen, and there were suspicions that they had all been used in crimes since the lake had opened. Unfortunately the weapons had decayed too much to gain any definitive evidence, but it just goes to show that despite how sure you might be that a lake bed is the perfect place to hide incriminating evidence, there’s always a chance that it might be found.

8. Canal Saint-Martin, Paris
The Canal Saint-Martin is one of the iconic waterways that flows through the 10th arrondissement in Paris, but with increasing visitors to the area comes a higher volume of trash. To combat this in 2016, a $11 million dollar project began to drain 90,000 cubic metres of water from the canal, and the objects that were subsequently found surprised everyone!
After three months the water levels had reduced to just 50 centimetres, which allowed workers to relocate 4.5 tonnes of wildlife, and then the remaining water was removed. Cleaning crews were finally allowed to start work, and they removed; countless bikes, hundred of chairs, a motorbike, supermarket trolleys, a fire extinguisher, dustbins, street signs, umbrellas, suitcases, and a handgun.
While this may seem like quite a haul, officials were relieved at what they had found. This was the first time the canal had been drained for 15 years, and the last time they had found two 75mm shells from the first world war, gold coins, and at least 4 different safes. It’s always a surprise!

7. Castaic Lake, LA
After 4 dry years in California, the waters started receding in the local lakes, and all sorts of treasures were revealed. The national park service started issuing permits for people to visit a sunken B-52 bomber in Lake Mead near the Hoover dam, but it was the nearby Castaic Lake that revealed something unusual.
So the story goes- in 1992 a federal agent was out boating with a friend. He had put all of his belongings in a backpack, which fell overboard and was lost to the murky depths. When the water level dropped, though, a fisherman found the partially decayed bag- and inside was the agent’s’ badge, a calendar, an old newspaper, and his handgun. Amazingly, local police were able to track down the agent after the discovery, and return the items to him- apart from the gun that had rusted away and was disposed of in the appropriate manner. Which, I don’t really know what that means.
